The Group

Sodalitas is part of a highly articulate business structure managed by the CLS FOUNDATION.
The CLS FOUNDATION holds 49% of Sodalitas through CLS PROVIDENTIA Impresa Sociale Solidale.

The remaining 51% of Sodalitas is held by the Founding Partners and the Sodales Shareholders of the CLS Foundation.

Nano-Material: the product, which can be either natural or created specifically, contains particles in which at least one external dimension is within a range of 1 nm – 100 nm.

The aim of CLS Sodalitas is the development, production and sale of cellulose nanoparticles (CNs), made from agricultural biomass, rubble and cellulose-based waste and by-products of the paper, textiles and agri-food industries.
Why we should invest in the production of Cellulose Nanoparticles

The nanocellulose market is considered to be undergoing a strong expansion and many companies and advanced research centres in Europe, America and Canada, and in certain emerging countries, are working on the production of various types of CNs and are focusing on their growing use.

In Italy, on the other hand, production activities of this kind have still to be launched on an industrial scale, and it is felt that a similar activity could be extremely useful and advantageous for two fundamental reasons:

the country has enormous amounts of cellulose-rich biomass, resulting from farming activities and from activities inherent in certain typical food technologies (production of flours, pasta, rice, etc…), which could be put to good use in the production of CNFs.
the raw materials for the production of paper and cardboard represent one of the main import items weighing on Italy’s commercial budget; consequently, reduced use in exchange for better performance could generate consistent economic advantages.
CNMs are anticipated to have significant commercial impact because for their RENEWABLE NATURE and UNIQUE PROPERTIES.

They are considered to have potential applications in a wide range of products including those that currently utilize non-renewable, oil-based materials or ingredients. In particular, the interest for possible packaging applications of cellulose nano-crystals (CNCs) and cellulose nano-fibrils (CNFs) is continuously and very rapidly growing all around the world.

Actually, very attractive properties can be detected when the size of cellulose molecules is brought down to the nanoscale.

Extraordinary gas barrier functionalities and improved mechanical properties, differently expressed by CNCs and CNFs, lead to very promising applications in bio-based flexible packaging and cellulosic materials for food products. Besides the biodegradability and the origin from renewable sources a strong interest exists about the potential of activating feasible paradigms of circular economy, related to the chance of producing CNCs and CNFs from biomasses and by-products cellulose containing.
